Since the Del Mar Fairgrounds are a fair distance from our Long Beach home, we pulled a few strings to make it work. I started my regular work day at 5:30am so I’d be off by 1:30pm, giving us enough time to get things together for Phil’s evening at Jay’s house. Turns out Josh is amazing, and had everything packed and ready to go when I peeled myself away from the computer; pretty much all I had to do when I got off work was get myself and little boy dressed and we were off to the circus!
(Short on time? Don’t forget to scroll down to the end of this post for a special offer on discount tickets to TOTEM by Cirque du Soleil!)
We are huge fans of skipping out on rush hour traffic, so we dropped Phil off and were on the road to San Diego by 3pm. The thing that amazes me about southern California is that no matter what time of the day it is, there’s always 20,000 other cars on the road. You could be driving at 3pm, you could be driving at 3am. There’s always cars everywhere.
Thankfully, Josh and I had each other to entertain us on the long drive. We were super excited – a mini road trip, an evening out with the little boy at the sitter, and TOTEM by Cirque du Soleil ! Neither one of us had ever seen a Cirque du Soleil show in person before, and I’ve always heard such rave reviews!
Here’s something the San Diego area 5 freeway has over other parts of the 5 further north. (Section of the 5 right around where it hits the 605, I’m looking at you.) Much better scenery. A commute on this part of the 5 probably wouldn’t drive me to madness.
We got to the Del Mar Fairgrounds really early, at about 4:30pm for the 7:30pm show. Lucky for us, we were early enough for the early bird dinner specials at The Fish Market restaurant right next door! As you can see, we are very classy folks with only the best table manners. After careful reviews of the menu, we dined on california rolls, panko fish & chips, and dijon crusted tilapia – ooo la la!
We may have also had dessert.
And also? We’re hilarious. Our dinner table rule – we for the most part try to leave our phones out of sight when we’re doing things together, but if someone says something REALLY funny… That’s a Twitter.
Enough dilly-dallying at dinner, it’s time for TOTEM by Cirque du Soleil! We arrived at the Del Mar Fairgrounds greeted with a little bit of a drizzle, which turned into a little stronger hit of rain. The circus staff was friendly and accommodating, and opened the doors early so no one had to stand in the rain. We were treated to complimentary popcorn and soda, and enjoyed a good bit of people watching as we waited for the show to begin.
As it got closer to show time, various characters from the show came out into the audience to interact with circusgoers. I don’t wanna ruin it for you by spilling the secrets of any of the characters – they’re funny and whimsical and just great.
The show started with a bang, with these amazing acrobats dressed as frogs jumping all over this turtle shell shaped structure. Think of that metal dome jungle gym at your old middle school, and put a trampoline underneath. It was insane!
The overall theme of the show was nature and evolution, and it was cool how it was incorporated really subtly in places. There were a couple of gals who spun pieces of cloth on their feet… which doesn’t sound all that crazy when you read that. But they spun these blankets on their hands and feet while doing acrobatics and balancing on top of each other, and it was ridiculously cool! As they spun their blankets, I thought of hand-tossed pizzas and got hungry all over again. But THEN, I saw something magic. As they contorted themselves and had their arms and legs stuck up in the air spinning these blankets, the blankets and appendages merged and I got it. They became toadstools in the forest. It was the coolest thing, guys.
These gals rode unicycles around and flipped bowls from their feets onto their heads. Yeah those are bowls on their heads!!! They balance a bowl on their foot, and kick it so it lands precisely on someone else’s head as they unicycle by. I’m not kidding.
I did figure out the secret to this stunt, and I’m excited to share with you how to do this at home!

- Maybe put a little more ice cream on top. What you’re going for here is overflowing.
- Sit on the couch.
- Eat ice cream and cry, feeling sorry for yourself that you’ll never be able to flip a bowl on your head while riding a unicycle like the gals from Cirque du Soleil.
