Adult Coloring Pages – Vintage 1920s Flapper Illustration
I’ve been having a total blast this month in the first assignment for the current Lilla Rogers Make Art that Sells Bootcamp class! Our topic for March was adult coloring pages – more specifically, come up with cover art for a 1920s themed coloring book.
Here’s my concept art – I love it because the “Sassy Dames of” title lends itself to a whole coloring book series:
I can see it now:
Sassy Dames of Ancient Rome!
Sassy Dames of Caveman Days!
Slightly Less Sassy Dames of the Great Depression!
Sassy Dames of Outer Space!
I would be so over the moon to make my adult coloring pages reach an even wider audience – wanna help me make it happen? Contact me. Let’s actually publish Sassy Dames of the 1920s together!

What was really funny about this adult coloring pages assignment was the prelim work that led up to my sassy dame.
Every Make Art that Sells project starts with a “mini” – it’s kind of a little creative jump start on the topic of the assignment to get you creating a lot of different bits and pieces of art that you could use in the big assignment. For this assignment, we were supposed to draw 1920s hairstyles.
It was a blast. But it got me a little worried – was my style coming across too coloring book art? Was it too simplified?
Was it good enough?
And then, this sassy dame danced her way into my sketches:
As I cleaned her up, I knew I needed to do something fun with her.

But I was still a little worried – what could I do with this gal to really push her to the next level? I began experimenting with art techniques, and really like what happened when I tried drawing with a fine brush using india ink, with watercolor fills:
I really like the style of this gal, and I’m gonna do more like that… It’s a really cool departure from hard mechanical Pigma Micron lines.
But then, we got the assignment. And it was all about adult coloring books, and my happy dancing flapper girl was just dead on perfect.
I hope you enjoy coloring her!
