How to Make a Cute Father/Daughter Masha and the Bear Halloween Costume

You guys. I am so stoked that we were able to pull together this year’s genius family Halloween costume!!!

We’ve had a few awesome ideas over the past two months thanks to Phil coming up with something different to dress up as every three seconds. (Some of those ideas were comedy gold, and I’m keeping them under my hat for next year.)

He ended up deciding to be Superman with a costume the Burkhalters had given him for his birthday last year. I’ve been tasked to dress as Batman so we can go as the Justice League together. I said okay, but I’m gonna do it up right.

But the one I’m really excited about is Josh and Joy’s father/daughter Masha and the Bear Halloween costume.

If you haven’t seen Masha and the Bear, it’s this really great Russian cartoon about a little girl that’s best friends with an old circus bear who lives in the woods. There’s nine episodes on Netflix, they’re completely hilarious, and we’ve seen each of them eight thousand times.

Not exaggerating.

Joy is completely obsessed. She calls the show “Bear Bear”; she giggles with glee when the show’s theme song plays and the characters dance to the title sequence. She cries when the end credits roll. We’re pretty sure it’s because every single thing this little girl Masha does on tv is something we can see our daughter doing.

Joy is Masha. And this weekend for Halloween?

Joy is Masha.

For Dad: Get a Bear Costume

But one afternoon about a week ago, I realized it’s now or never on the Masha and the Bear costume – next year, she’s probably gonna be over it.

So I called a local costume rental place. “Do you have any grizzly bear costumes for rent?” I ask. The guy on the other end of the line sounded rushed. He tells me they have five bear costumes, and I’ll need to come down and take a look. I tell him that I’ve never rented a costume before, how does the whole thing work?

Fifty bucks to rent a bear costume for one day, plus a thirty dollar refundable deposit.

Fifty bucks!?!?!

So I hit up Amazon, and for forty five dollars I found this bear suit that we get to keep for a lifetime of ridiculousness.

For your Little Girl: Make a Simple Masha Costume

Now the Masha costume… this kind of has to be a father/daughter Halloween costume, because her part of it is basically a dress out of her closet. Pull some options out, take a look at what has a really simple silhouette. Here was round one of our Masha dress options:

We didn’t take this lightly! Josh and I sent this photo out to fellow Masha experts – my mom in law Carole and our friend Jennifer. We originally chose the cute peachy coral one, because it’d be easy to layer a long sleeve shirt under if the evening of Trick or Treating is chilly. But the most important part of the Masha Halloween costume is the coordinating head scarf, and that’s what ended up guiding our hand.

Once I got my fabric stash out and started pairing them with our dress options, the cute pink Carters dress was the clear winner.

Someone’s gotta draw those little butterflies, right? That someone was me. This particular piece was a sample sent to the office from the fabric manufacturer that I got to keep.

I used one of my own favorite head scarves as a guide for size, and cut a large triangle. Then, I finished off all three edges so the woven fabric wouldn’t unravel and get all stringy. It’s easy to do – make sure you’ve got a hot iron going (heat it to the correct temperature for you’re the type of fabric you’re using).

Do one edge at a time – fold over about ¼” of fabric, then fold over another ¼”. Press it with the iron so the edges of your folds are nice and crisp. Sew along the fold. Repeat that for the other two edges of your fabric triangle, and you’ve got an easy peasy Masha head scarf! Put your daughter in her super cute dress, throw some pigtails in her hair, put that head scarf on and you’re good to go!

It just isn’t comfortable, so don’t even try. Instead of tying it behind her head so there’s this big knot back there (which wouldn’t be super comfortable either), we’re holding it closed around Joy’s head with a little poly rubber band like this one, and then keeping it secure on her head with a couple of hair clips.

I’m seriously so excited that we were able to get it together on this father/daughter Masha and the Bear costume.

What are you going as for Halloween? I wanna know!!! Tell us in the comments or share photos on our Facebook page!
